The clinic and this website

Accessibility

The standard this website is built to, what the building offers, what still falls short, and how to tell us.

Getting to us should be easy, whether you arrive on foot, in a wheelchair, by keyboard, or with a screen reader.

The standard we build to

This website is built to WCAG 2.2 AA, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines published by the W3C. The standard guided the site from its first page, and we check against it whenever a page changes.

Version 2.2 includes everything version 2.1 asks for and adds newer criteria on top. Among them, tap targets now have a minimum size, and a focused control may never hide behind a sticky bar.

What it means on this site

Structure

Pages use real headings in order, landmarks, lists, and native buttons and links. A screen reader hears each page in the same order you see it.

Keyboard

Everything you can click, you can reach and use with a keyboard alone. A visible focus ring always shows where you are. Menus and the breathing guide close with Escape and return you to where you were.

Contrast and text size

Text meets AA contrast against its background, at least 4.5 to 1 for body text. Pages hold together when you zoom in or enlarge the text in your browser.

Tap targets

Navigation links and buttons are at least 44 pixels tall, big enough for a thumb. Smaller links are spaced so a near miss does not land on the wrong one.

Motion

The pause button sits at the right end of the header bar, marked with two short bars. One press pauses the moving light, the breathing animations, and the fog on the window, on every page, and the site remembers your choice. Turn on reduce motion in your device settings and the site holds still without it. Either way, things move only when you start them, like wiping the window or taking a guided breath.

Images

Photographs carry alt text that describes what is in them. Decorative marks, like the small sun, are hidden from screen readers. The breathing guide gives each cue in words as well as in light.

Forms

Every field has a visible label. If something needs fixing, the message appears beside the field and says what to change. Nothing on this site is timed, so take as long as you need.

Measurement

Pages we change go through automated checks before they go live: the axe rules for WCAG 2.2 AA, a colour contrast sweep, a tap target count, and a check of keyboard focus order. Then we walk each page by keyboard, by hand. Automated tools catch only part of the problem, so their results are where our checking starts.

The building

The clinic is in the old Reach Mercantile building at 12 Alder Street in Heron Reach.

  • The Alder Street entrance is step-free, and the doors are powered.
  • The mercantile was built for freight, and we kept the wide doorways.
  • Every treatment room and the washroom fit mobility devices with room to spare.
  • Two accessible parking spots sit beside the main door.
  • Longer appointment slots are yours for the asking, at no extra charge.
  • Ruth's counselling room has its own entrance off the side hall on Third Avenue.
  • Counselling sessions are also available by video.

If anything about visiting would be easier with notice, tell us when you book. Parking, hours, and the way in are on Finding us.

Where this site stands

We hold this site to the standard above, and we keep adding to it. These are the limits we know about today. If you find another, we want to hear about it.

Text over photographs

Automated tools cannot judge text that sits on a photograph, so we check those spots by eye. If one is hard for you to read, tell us and we will fix it.

Canvases

The moving light behind every page and the fogged window on the home page are drawn on canvases, which screen readers cannot read. The window comes with a written description of the room behind the glass. The moving light is decoration and carries no information.

Booking pages run by others

Online booking hands off to a booking provider's pages, which we do not control. On this concept the handoff is a mock-up. On a live site those pages could hold barriers we cannot fix, so phone and email always work instead, and the front desk will book you.

Found a barrier? Tell us

If any part of this site is hard to use, with assistive technology or without it, call or email us. Tell us what happened and what you were using. We reply within one business day.

Every report gets the same care. We fix the problem first, then check the fix with the same kind of setup that hit it. Then we write back to tell you what changed.

A note on this concept

This website is a portfolio concept by Kootenay Made Digital. The Morrow Clinic, its building, and Heron Reach are invented. The website and its accessibility work are real. To report a barrier on this concept, use the routes on the Kootenay Made Digital accessibility page.

Tell us what would help.

When you book, mention anything that would make the visit easier. Longer appointment slots cost nothing extra.
